East Side Union School District selects Eddie Garcia as new board member
After narrowing the field of candidates from 20 down to four, the East Side Union High School District selected Eddie Garcia to replace Craig Mann on its board of trustees.
The Dec. 14 meeting, which lasted six hours, settled on Garcia, the vice president and government-affairs manager from Comcast, after three ballots. Garcia replaces Craig Mann, who was elected to the Santa Clara County School Board last June.
Garcia, a former policy aide to Santa Clara County Supervisor Blanca Alvarado, is board president for the Mexican Heritage Plaza. A graduate of San Jose State, he failed in two attempts to join the Evergreen School Board and also ran unsuccessfully for the San Jose City Council in 2000.

Caltrain holiday schedules and free rides on New Year’s Eve
Despite the season, Caltrain doesn't take a holiday. In fact, the agency is ramping up to provide extra train service for homeward-bound New Year's revelers.
Caltrain will run on a Sunday schedule on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. The Sunday schedule offers 28 trains operating between San Francisco and San Jose.
New Year's Eve, Caltrain will offer free rides after 11 p.m. to encourage New Year's Eve partygoers to use the train as their designated driver. And to accommodate those who want to keep partying until the end, Caltrain will add three post-midnight, southbound trains to its regular holiday schedule, Jan. 1. These extra trains will depart the San Francisco station at 12:45 a.m., 1:30 a.m. and 2 a.m., making all local weekend stops
