EVC announces new retail management certificate program

“The forecast for retail careers looks promising,” said Dr. Jonathan King, Dean of Business and Workforce Development at Evergreen Valley College (EVC), and he wants to help those in the retail industry climb the ladder. Beginning spring 2008, EVC will offer a new Retail Management Certificate Program, designed to provide training for those who want to become store managers, franchise owners, retail buyers or consultants.

"As the retail industry becomes more directly influenced by the pressures of globalization, it will become imperative for managers to understand how to respond to the market changes and trends that directly impact their retail establishments," said King. "This program is aimed at training managers to be effective in their day-to-day activities, as well as providing them a framework for implementing strategies as a leader in moving their organizations into the future."

Evergreen's Retail Manage-ment Certificate Program is a comprehensive academic 33-unit program that incorporates both educational knowledge and technical skills to lead students to competence in retail management. The certificate meets the needs of industry leaders and was developed in collaboration with industry professionals, including the Western Association of Food Chains (WAFC).

Additionally, EVC's broad-based program will enable students to be better prepared for the numerous and varied management opportunities available in the retail industry. Program courses include Human Relations in the Workplace, Retail Store Management, Introduction to Marketing Principles and Business Math. The Certificate easily transfers into the two-year A.A.S. Degree in Retail Management or Business Administration.

To get started, Dean King suggests registering early for the start of the spring semester on Jan. 28, 2008. For questions, students are encouraged to call Mary Wong-Kauzlarich, 408-274-6434, or Sally Chumbley at 408- 270-7900, extension 6628.
