Cub Scout Pack 222 assists Red Cross,
Second Harvest Food Bank

On the weekend before Thanksgiving, Pack 222 joined Boy Scouts around the South Bay by collecting food for Second Harvest Food Bank.

When Hurricane Katrina impacted Louisiana, Alabama, Texas and Mississippi, Cub Scout Pack 222 pulled together to do what scouts do best: help other people.

Evergreen-based Pack 222 created Hurricane Katrina ribbons and approached the community for support, requesting whatever donations people were willing to contribute. Their efforts will continue until Dec. 13 when they present a check to the Red Cross as a formal donation for Hurricane Katrina relief.

The scouts, who meet at James F. Smith Elementary School, have additional ribbons for sale, so if anyone in the community would like to purchase one, they can call (408) 239-0663 and ask for Monique.

Second Harvest Food Bank
Thanksgiving couldn’t pass without the efforts of local Evergreen scouts collecting food for Second Harvest Food Bank. This year, Pack 222 exceeded its record of collecting 1,700 pounds of food in 2004 by collecting 2,200 pounds of food.

Members of Pack 222 at collected food at Cosentinos.

Six dens of Cub Scouts in Pack 222, first through fifth grade, set up tables and collected food at six Evergreen grocery stores on Friday, Nov. 18. When Saturday morning rolled around, about 25 of the Cub Scouts went door-to-door in their neighborhoods asking for donations.

Once they weighed all the food, everyone helped load it into three pick-up trucks, filled to the brim, off to the Second Harvest Food Bank.

“I am so proud of my Cub Scout Pack; they were into it,” said Scoutmaster Marc Albin. “The kids got super excited when someone gave us a bag of food. It was truly fascinating to watch the excitement of the kids. It was a proud day for me, the parents and the kids. I sure hope many families have a better holiday season because of what we did—that is part of what motivates me.”
