The sounds of silence
By Vong Sok
Silver Creek High School
Powered by generators since the Oct. 26 explosion, Silver Creek High School has had to adapt to the hum of generators on campus. During the repair process, the East Side Union district office pulled in two humungous trailer generators that were notorious for the loud continuous churning throughout the day.
“It was like being in an airport, when the students came in the noise was as loud as a plane landing or taking off, said math teacher Mary Barrett Wong. “It was also either freezing cold or hot.”
The size of the generators took up lots of space, mainly in front of “L” and “K” buildings. “The fencing around my room made it feel like the students were coming in off the tarmac,” said Barrett-Wong.
Peace was finally restored to the Silver Creek campus on Nov. 6, when the transformer was repaired and the trailers were removed.
For over a month, teachers, especially those located in the “L” classrooms, endured the noise and walked around fencing. Now that the school had returned to direct power, there was no more obnoxious machinery to drown out faculty lectures.
Pleased with the silence, many teachers expressed their relief. “It was loud, but since it was necessary, I’m glad it was here at the school and I’m happy that it’s now gone,” said SCHS math teacher, Arsalan Niazmand.

Silver Creek High School’s drama department is putting on a play for the holiday season. “Ebenezer” is a modern take on the classic tale of Ebenezer Scrooge. Will Ebenezer’s love for Christmas be crushed after Jacob Marley and his gang of ghosts tries to show him otherwise? The only way to find out is to go to a performance at the SCHS theater.
Performances will be: Friday, Nov. 30, and Saturday, Dec. 1, at 7 p.m.
Admission is $1 - Tickets will be sold at the door.
