The Cub Scouts received donations from shoppers of various Evergreen grocery stores throughout the first part of November and collected door-to-door in their own neighborhoods, then delivered the truckloads of food on Saturday, Nov. 15.
About 30 Cub Scouts and their families handed out fliers, spoke to potential donors and collected many heavy bags filled with food. The Evergreen area should be proud for helping Pack 222 collect 1,000 more pounds of food than any other unit in the Boy Scout’s Coyote Creek District!
The Scouting for Food initiative is a part of the Boy Scouts of America’s “Good Turn for America” program, and is the nation’s largest one-day food drive, usually raising a significant percentage of the annual supply for food shelters.
This “Good Turn for America” program demonstrates how youth can have a positive impact on a serious problem in their own community and involves more than 40,000 Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Venturers and Explorers throughout the Bay Area.
“Our Cub Scouts and their families really enjoy uniting for this annual event and this year was no exception. We collected a lot of food to give back to the community, showing that even with this economy, we can help people in need,” said Ron Davis, Cubmaster for Pack 222.
Pack 222 is hosted by James F. Smith Elementary School, with Cub Scouts who are in first through fifth grades.
