Evergreen schools work together in readiness for expanding school population
Sixth grade Matsumoto students to become a satellite at Chaboya School
By Donna H Eliason
Staff Writer
Forums are planned in 2008 by the Evergreen School District for parents’ imput concerning the necessary boundary changes for 2009. Because of the expanding school population and the consistent necessity to continue quality education for all students, Matsumoto 6th graders will be considered a satellite while located at Chaboya School, about a 5-minute walk away.
Students will still be part of all Matsumoto School activities
Five Matsumoto teachers will move with these approximately 145 students to a special pod or section of the school. Extensive plans and preparations have started between the district, and personnel from the two schools so the transition will be smooth. Parents are also involved. A volunteer parent who teaches music will continue with the 6th graders at Chaboya. The 6th graders will follow the same school schedule and be involved in Matsumoto events such as assemblies etc. Students and parents will still enjoy special family nights, such as the Dr. Seuss night.
Students will be Principal Mary Helmer’s first graduating class
Matsumoto Principal Mary Helmet has a long personal association with and a personal attachment with these students who were lst graders when she became Assistant Principal. Mary, a math major from Louisiana State University, and math teacher for 25 years in middle and high schools, taught at Cheboya from l991 to l997.
District without walls emphasis teamwork and collaboration to solve problems
“Evergreen is a district without walls,” Mary says. Teamwork and collaboration are used effectively from the top to the bottom of the district.” Because of the feeling of “family” within the district, all plans and changes are carefully analyzed for their effect upon the students and their education. With future population growth projections, adjustments must be made so the impact doesn’t change the education quality.
Evidences of the population growth at Matsumoto are everywhere. Kindergarten students are bussed in and out. Over 400 lst through 3rd grade students have recess together.
Mary Helmer encourages her students to enjoy the “now” in their education, and enjoy each opportunity as it emerges.
