Unique Lives & Experiences Returns to Center for the Performing Arts
The Unique Lives and Experiences lecture series is returning to San Jose’s Center for the Performing Arts for its fourth year with five inspirational evenings.
One of the most influential writers, editors and activists of our time, Gloria Steinem, will begin the series on Monday, March 9, 2009. As co-founder of Ms. Magazine, Ms. Steinem helped to forever change the way women would view them selves and be treated by others. Today, she continues to speak fervently on issues of gender bias and inequality. Gloria Steinhem will open up your eyes and hearts to a new agenda of social change and responsibility.
On March 23, 2009, six-time Emmy Award winner, Carol Burnett, will present “Laughter and Reflection with Carol Burnett, A Conversation with Carol Burnett” where the audience has the rare opportunity to ask the questions. Ms. Burnett has demonstrated such versatility since ending the 11-year run of the Carol Burnett Show. Today she is widely recognized for her dramatic abilities as she is for her comedic and musical talents.
Actor, producer, author and mother of four, Marlee Matlin will take the stage Monday, April 27, 2009. Deafness has not handicapped Marlee Matlin,, nor her career. She has single-handedly turned obstacles into opportunities and stands as an inspiration to us all.
One year old, Sarah Culberson, was adopted by a white West Virginia couple. At 28, she sought out her birth parents learning that her biological mother had been a white college student who died of cancer. Her birth father, Joseph Konia Kposowa was a member of the ruling family governing Bumpe village and the Medne tribe in Sierra Leone. Ms. Culberson will share her life story on Monday, May 18, 2009.
The 2009 Unique Lives season ends with Madeleine Albright, Former U. S. Secretary of State, June 4, 2009. In her role as U.S. Secretary of State, Ms. Albright presided over an historic time of global opportunity and change. Join us as Secretary Albright shares her life story and her vision on the challenges facing us in the new millennium.
