November 13 – Saturday
The highly acclaimed vocal ensemble SoVoSó will perform in concert at 7:30 p.m. as part of the Almaden Adventures in the Arts concert series at Joint Venture Churches of Almaden, 6581 Camden Avenue, in San Jose. SoVoSó is a highly imaginative a cappella ensemble that sings a unique, rhythmic mix of jazz, gospel, world and R&B music, all rendered in their trademark improvisational style. November 20 – December 5
Opera San Jose presents Puccini’s “Tosca”at the beautifully renovated California Theater in downtown San Jose. This opera details the tragic tale of the beautiful singer Tosca, her lover Cavaradossi and the manipulative and betraying police chief of Rome, Scarpia. Admission is $20 for preview, $60 and $80. THEATER
November 6 – December 4
The West Valley Light Opera Association’s 40th Season will open with “Big River” at the Saratoga Civic Theater, 13777 Fruitvale, on Nov. 6 at 8 p.m. with a champagne gala. Weekend performances will continue through December 4. This tony-award winning musical is based on Mark Twain’s “The Adventures of Huckelberry Finn.” This production is directed by Becky W. Brownson. Local artists Harriet Helfricht and her studio partner Manny Magallon will host an “open studio” 11a.m. to 5p.m. at 1752 Frobisher Way, near Curtner Ave and Dumbarton. Exhibition and sales include: Pottery, Painting, Sculpture, and Crystalline glaze sinks.

MEETINGS
November 10 – Wednesday
Hospice of the Valley presents “Getting Through The Holidays,” a seminar offering emotional support and practical ideas for getting through the holiday season without your loved one. Adult members of bereaved families from the community are encouraged to attend. Seminar hours are 7 – 9 p.m. at the Campbell Community Center - Roosevelt Room, 1 West Campbell Avenue in Campbell. Oakridge Century Theatres in association with Las Madres Neighborhood Playgroups presents CineMamas! A morning out to the movies for moms and their little ones. This group meets every Tuesday at 10 a.m., There are three showings to choose from, baby-safe sound levels, cheerios at the concession stand and a relaxing atmosphere with other moms who understand kids are kids! CLASSES
Ongoing
Evergreen Village Square (Ruby at Aborn) offers a wide variety of performing arts classes for all ages. All elementary age classes are on Saturday afternoons and run for approximately 12 weeks per session. Adult and teen 12-week acting workshops are held on Friday evenings. The New Almaden Community Center will be hosting a weekly yoga class on Mon/Wed/Fri. at 6 a.m. and on Tues/Thurs. at 7 a.m. Attendees should bring their own yoga mats, however, there are a limited number of pads available. South Bay Deutscher Schulverein, a Saturday German Language School, offers German language instructions at their new location at the Willow Glen Educational Park, Middle School Section, 2001 Cottle Avenue. AARP Information Center needs volunteers to staff their office. Duties include helping seniors find various services and programs, and providing information on senior needs. Jumpstart Girls’ Volleyball Club will hold tryouts for beginner to advanced players for competition and developmental teams. The California Theatre Center (CTC) presents The “Journey of Lewis and Clark” at the Sunnyvale Community Center Theatre, 550 East Remington Drive (just off El Camino Real), at 11 am. Los Mestizos Folklorico Dance Group presents “Fiesta Folklorica” for one night only at the Montgomery Theatre, at 7 p.m. Admission is $10.00 prior to the event and $15.00 on the day of the event. Experience a night full of Mexican Culture, Music and Dance as adult and child dancers perform various regional dances of Mexico. The Sierra Club’s Guadalupe Regional Group will be treated to a slide presentation on the return of California Condors to Pinnacles National Monument. Photographer and local Audubon chapter director Ralph Schardt was designated official photographer for the project by Monument officials, and has captured all aspects of the project. The Guadalupe Group meets at 7:30 p.m. in the Community Room of the Saratoga Library, on Saratoga Ave. at Fruitvale in Saratoga. The public is welcome and refreshments will be served—bring your own cup to reduce waste!

November 20 – 21
Holy Family Educational Center, 4850 Pearl, will be hosting their annual Holiday Boutique from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. December 4 – 5
San Jose Youth Ballet will be presenting Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker to audiences at the Evergreen Valley Theatre in San Jose. This production features talented pre-professional dancers ages 7-18 in a charming and family- oriented production of the Nutcracker Ballet. This production is choreographed by Maggie Ferla and Xavier Ferla, co-directors of Dance Theatre International. Volunteers Needed for Tax Preparation The City of San José’s, Office on Aging in conjunction with AARP Tax-Aide, the IRS and the Metropolitan Adult Education Program provides a free tax-training program that prepares volunteers to assist seniors and lower income clients with their tax returns. Training classes will be held from October 18 – December 15, on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. All classes will be at the Willows Senior Center, 2175 Lincoln Avenue in San Jose. EMQ Children and Family Services is a non-profit agency serving children struggling with severe emotional issues. EMQ is seeking adult mentors to connect with youth ages 7 – 17 for two hours per week. Training is provided. Applicants must be a licensed driver. Safe Haven Animal Sanctuary, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing care to animals, has volunteer opportunities for foster caregivers for kittens and cats and for petfaire workers for our Saturday PetClub events.

Soroptimist International of Silicon Valley Announces Holiday Boutique Soroptimist International of Silicon Valley, (SISV), a local chapter of a worldwide service organization whose mission is to make a difference for women and girls, will hold a fundraising “Holiday Boutique” from 9 am to 6 pm. at the Odd Fellows Hall, 276 East Campbell in downtown Campbell. The proceeds from this event will go towards numerous projects supported by SISV., including Next Door Solutions, Womens Opportuity Award and The Violet Richardson Award. The boutique will feature a wide range of products, including jewelry, fabric art, cosmetics and paper made by local artists will be available for purchase.

La Rochelle Winery, 3000 Aborn Road in San Jose, will be hosting a Candelight Dinner. Each course will be prepared by Chef de Cuisine, David Page, is paired with the appropriate La Rochelle wine. Held in the Barrel Room, this elegant eight course dinner begins at 6:30 pm with a tasting reception followed by dinner featuring Pan Roasted Loin of Lamb as the main entrée.
