November 5 – Sunday
You are invited to join the Mission Chamber Orchestra for a concert of spirited Italian music at Evergreen Valley High School, 3300 Quimby Road, San Jose. Enjoy Mendelssohn's Symphony no. 4, "Italian", Castelnuovo-Tedesco's poignant Guitar Concerto no. 1, and Nino Rota's Balli. Rising star Michael Bautista is the featured guitar soloist in this performance that is sure to leave you longing for a trip to the boot-shaped country. You will know Nino Rota from his film music (“Godfather,” “Juliet of the Spirits”). Viva l'italia! Concert begins at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 general, $5 for children under 12.

DANCE

November 16 - 19
Ballet San Jose presents the quintessential romantic ballet, “Giselle,” at the San Jose Center for the Performing Arts. With music by Adolphe Adam and choreography by Dennis Nahat (after Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot), Giselle was first performed over 150 years ago in Paris. October 21 – January 15, 2007
The new exhibit, “Dragons and Fairies: Exploring Viet Nam through Folktales,” opens at the Children’s Discovery Museum in San Jose. “Dragons and Fairies” is designed to educate children ages 5-12 about the rich cultural heritage of the Vietnamese people. It provides an opportunity to explore the lives and traditions of people living in modern and ancient Viet Nam. The Children’s Discover Museum is located at 180 Woz Way, in downtown San Jose, at the intersection of Woz Way and Auzerais Street. Hours are Tuesday–Saturday: 10 a.m. -5 p.m.; Sunday: noon-5 p.m. Member’s only hour is Sunday 11 a.m. – noon.

November 2 - 19
Bonfante Gardens Family Theme Park in Gilroy has extended the 2006 regular operating season. Visitors can now enjoy six (6) additional days of fall fun at California's only horticultural theme park. The new operating days are November 4-5, 11-12 and 18-19 from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. For more information about the regular 2006 season, visit www.bonfantegardens.org.

Radio Disney’s Jingle Jam Concert at South Hall: Radio Disney AM 1310 KMKY is hosting its 6th annual Jingle Jam Concert, presented by FoodMaxx and sponsored by Disney Mobile! This free event is full of fun things to do for the entire family, including interactive game booths and activities, a visit from Santa Claus and more. Plus, live on stage - the star of the hit new Disney Channel Show "Hannah Montana", Miley Cyrus, performing as Hannah Montana. Also performing are the Jonas Brothers and Nuttin' But Stringz. The Evergreen Community Center, 4860 San Felipe Road in San Jose offers a variety of classes and special monthly events, as well as a Senior Nutrition Program. The Nutrition Program serves a delicious and well-balanced meal to seniors 60 and over every Monday – Friday at noon. The suggested donation is $2 per person. AARP Information Center needs volunteers to staff their office. Duties include helping seniors find various services and programs, and providing information on senior needs. The office is located at 840 Willow Street, Suite 300, at the corner of Bird and Willow Streets on bus route #25. The hours are Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information, call 278-1855.

VOLUNTEERS

Humane Society Silicon Valley (HSSV) is actively recruiting volunteers who are interested in fostering dogs or puppies. Canine foster parents provide short and long-term care for dogs or puppies who are either fearful of being in a shelter environment, too young to be adopted or need time to heal from an injury or illness. November 5 – Sunday
Fall Furry Flurry - 5K all breed Dog Walk for the whole family at Los Gatos Creek County Park. Hosted by the Bay Area Siberian Husky Club, this walk is set up for pledges for walking to support any Bay Area Animal Rescue Organization of your choice. Each canine participant will receive a goody bag of treats, and Frosty Paws; each human participant will receive a long-sleeved Fall Furry Flurry T-shirt. Dr. Aida Hurtado will speak at Evergreen Valley College as part of its President’s Speaker Series at 12:30 p.m. in Gullo II located in the Student Services Center. Her published works include The Color of Privilege:  Three Blasphemies on Race and Feminism; Voicing Feminisms; and Young Chicanas Speak Out on Sexuality and Identity. Hurtado is co editor of Chicana Feminisms: A Critical Reader and her most recent book co-authored with Patricia Gurin is Chicana/o Identity in a changing U.S. society. ¿Quién soy? ¿Quiénes somos? Dr. Hurtado is recognized as an expert on Hispanic students, and was invited by President Clinton to participate in a White House Strategy Session on improving the achievement of Hispanic Students.  She led the panel on eliminating the achievement gap in Hispanic educational achievement. The focus of the EVC President’s Speaker Series is on creating relationships between the community and the campus and on increasing student success. Hospice of the Valley presents, “Getting Through the Holidays,” a special community event that offers emotional support and practical ideas for getting through the first holiday season without your loved one. Adult members of bereaved families from the community are encouraged to attend this pre-holiday event from 7 – 9 p.m. at Hospice of the Valley, 4850 Union Avenue in San Jose, near Hwy 85. Dog Behavior Seminar featuring Cheri Lucas, Founder and President of Second Chance at Love Humane Society. Lucas is also the protégé of Dog Whisperer Cesar Millan. Dance to the Joe Sharino Band at the Snow Season Kick-off Party presented by the Apres Ski Club at the Techmart, 5201 Great America Parkway, Santa Clara.  No-host bar from 6 p.m.  Vendor booths from 7 p.m. $25 admission includes buffet dinner at 7:30 p.m., dancing from 9 p.m., and party time fun. November 23 – Thursday
Registration is open for the Second Annual “Applied Materials Silicon Valley Turkey Trot – Run or Walk for Health, Hope and a Home,” scheduled for 9 a.m. The race includes a 5K run or walk and a 10K run, with awards three-deep in all age group categories. In addition, there are several “races within the race,” including the “SAP CEO/Celebrity Charity Challenge,” the “KB Home Quickest Cop/ Fastest Firefighter Competition,” the EMC2 “Fittest Firm Competition” for the companies turning out the most employees. December 2 – Saturday
The Villages Swing Band will be entertaining with a holiday dance at the Villages Auditorium from 7:30-10 p.m.. "Silver and Gold" is the evenings theme and semi-formal dress is requested. The cost is $8 per person. Visitors will be given admittance at the security gate for the dance.

The Hearing Loss Association of Silicon Valley meets on the third Wednesday of each month (except July and August) at the Moose Lodge, 1580 Hamilton Avenue in San Jose.
