Evergreen family thanks anonymous person
for bringing lost dog to shelter

Dear Editor,
This past week our family went through the ordeal of having our small dog, a Bichon Frise, escape and run away. Because of the kindness of one person, we have her back with us, safe and sound.

This wonderful person took her to the new animal shelter where she was able to spend the night safely until we discovered her there the next morning. Since we do not know the identity of this person, we’re hopeful they’ll read this and know that we’ll be forever grateful to them for returning our dog to us. Thank you SO much!

Reader enjoys recent Silicon Valley Mom article

Dear Editor,
I thoroughly enjoyed your article “Bea’s Barrel of Birthday Advice” [Silicon Valley Mom, ET Oct 8 – 21]. As a busy mom, I enjoy reading the Evergreen Times late at night when my family has gone to bed and the day’s activities have been completed. What a fun article to end my day on.

It’s enjoyable to read of other parent’s experiences with such things as planning memorable birthday parties. We parents make every effort to build lasting memories in our child’s lives, but, of course, they don’t always turn out as we see them in our mind!

The article kept me laughing late in the evening and reminded me how thankful I am to enjoy our local newspaper.

Thank you!

Supporter of Ten Thousand Villages appreciates support

Dear Editor,
Thanks for that good article on the International Gift Faire and the color photo of the Ugandan basket weavers. Cool! We very much appreciate your support.

Three of us attended a workshop this spring where we met two of these weavers and spoke with them personally.
They both told us that because of orders from Ten Thousand Villages, they are able to send their children to school. Sales like ours help these women and other artisans in 30 developing countries provide better nutrition, education, health care and housing for their families.

Your paper is really quite comprehensive and filled with neighborhood news and events. You’re a very good editor. We hope your area readers appreciate the quality of news they’re getting.

The social ills $1 billion a week could tackle …

Dear Editor:
The Iraq war is costly to us, not only in lives but also in money. It now costs us over a billion dollars a week. A billion dollars a week. Recently, while I was contemplating the enormity of this amount and what social ills we could attack with it, Katrina happened.

P.S. Today I read it is estimated that we could buy up and secure most of the nuclear material around the globe for about $30 to $40 billion dollars.

The man doth protest too much, methinks

Dear Editor,
Mike Hill of the San Jose/Evergreen Community College District expressing concern for his integrity [ET Letters to the Editor, Oct. 8—21] makes me think of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Paraphrasing, with apologies to The Bard, “The man doth protest too much, methinks.”

While being worried about one’s reputation is a good thing, in general, the proper way to ensure good reputation is to honor one’s word. In 1996, Mr. Hill agreed—in writing— that SJECCD would not put a large grocer at Yerba Buena and San Felipe.

At that time, Mr. Hill noted in his agreement that he understood a large grocer at that location would damage the other planned retail in the area. It is disingenuous of Mr. Hill to complain so loudly of his honor being offended simply because people actually noticed he has chosen to try to break his promise.

Mr. Hill seems to be trying to make it appear that, well, he didn’t really mean what he agreed to and that, by the way, even if he did mean it, the Evergreen Town center and Lunardi’s have been open nine years and surely that should have been plenty of time to get established, anyhow. Good grief, the Town Center isn’t even fully built out yet and Lunardi’s is only two years old! The last thing this community needs is to cause two retail centers to fail just so that the San Jose/Evergreen Community College District can earn some extra income by developing its land.

Less protest, Mr. Hill, and more honor will solve your integrity problem, nicely. Honor your clear agreement not to put a large grocer at Yerba Buena and San Felipe.
