HIGH SCHOOL SCENE

College Night 2005 coming to EVHS Nov. 1

The annual San Jose Consortium “College Night ” hosted by the East Side Union High School District will be held at Evergreen Valley High School, 3300 Quimby Road, in the gym on Tuesday, Nov. 1, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

ESUHSD expects more than 100 colleges and universities to send representatives, including campuses of the University of California (UC) system and the California State University (CSU) system, all military academies, local community colleges, many private colleges, as well as other colleges and universities throughout California and the country.

All students and their parents are encouraged to attend and take this opportunity to ask questions of the college admissions representatives. The timing of this “College Night” is especially pertinent for seniors as the “admissions season” generally begins in November for the fall semester of 2006. Juniors are also urged to attend.

East Side Union High School District counselors will be available to confer with individual parents and students on college admissions requirements and procedures. Information on admission testing, SAT and Advance Placement will also be available.

College Night is sponsored by ESUHSD, but it also serves students and their families from Gilroy Unified San Jose Unified, Morgan Hill Unified, Milpitas Unified, Campbell Union and Los Gatos-Saratoga Joint Union School Districts.

Because this event includes almost 30 high schools throughout the San Jose region, average attendance exceeds 4,000 students and parents. Due to the large attendance, students and parents are encouraged to get there as early as possible. Parking will be available in both parking lots, located off Quimby Road. There is a lot below the school and one above the school.

High school seniors needed to volunteer at polls at November election

The Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters is looking for high school seniors to volunteer at the polls in the Nov. 8 Consolidated Special Statewide Election.

Serving at the polls is a great way for students to perform community service, learn more about the election process and earn a stipend of $105 or more.

Participants in the Student Election Officer Program must be high school seniors at least 16 years old with at least a 2.5 grade point average. They must also get permission from their schools and a parent or guardian.

About 350 students have currently volunteered to serve in the November election. As many as 700 to 800 students typically participate in a major countywide election. The county has consistently received positive feedback about the student program in past elections, both from students and other, more experienced election officers. Student volunteers are enthusiastic, eager to learn and tech-savvy.

Student election officers are responsible for setting up the polling place, processing voters and providing assistance as requested. In addition to serving a full day at the polls—usually 6 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. They must also attend a training class.

Student election officers can also earn an extra stipend for bilingual skills. Bilingual election officers must be fluent in English and one of the following federally mandated languages: Spanish, Vietnamese, Chinese and Tagalog.

EVHS seeks vendors, sponsors for third annual Holiday Craft Faire

The Evergreen Valley High School Athletic Booster Club is planning its biggest fund-raiser of the year: the Holiday Craft Faire to be held on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 12 and 13.

The first EVHS Holiday Craft Faire earned more than $6,000, and last year’s faire earned more than $9,000, with all proceeds funneling directly into EVHS Boys and Girls Athletics.

The booster club is looking for more committee members to help plan and organize this huge event, which includes more than 50 vendors, hourly raffle drawings, food concession, a children’s arts and crafts center and gift wrapping.

If you are interested in planning the event, please e-mail Brehmer, Jane_Brehmer@amat.com. If you or anyone you know is interested in being a vendor, call (408) 896-6570.
