The Villages Tennis Club establishes scholarships for Silver Creek HS

By Wendy Ferguson
Special to the Times

The Villages Tennis Club established two tennis scholarships to be awarded to high school senior tennis players. “We chose Silver Creek High School because of its proximity to The Villages and its diversity of students,” notes Wendy Ferguson, chair of the Scholarship Committee. In addition, tennis club members at The Villages have shown an interest in and supported the school’s tennis teams over the past years.

The annual scholarship is available for one girl and one boy senior tennis player with two or more years on the tennis team. The recipient must have a GPA of 2.5 or better and must attend a post-secondary educational institution such as a college, junior college or professional school. Applicants will use the school’s general form: Silver Creek’s “Go-For-It” scholarship form. The scholarship will be awarded at the school’s awards night in the spring.

The Tennis Club decided that a scholarship was a great way to return something to the community,” notes Ferguson. The club raised money in various ways and with much enthusiasm. First, the Tennis Club donated “seed” money.

Then, a Scholarship Tourn-ament was established, and fees went to the scholarship fund. In addition, many generous Tennis Club members donated money, and funds were raised during a rowdy but “silent” auction. And, there’s an ongoing raffle of a handmade Christmas tree “skirt,” the winner of which will be drawn in December.

For more information about the scholarships, contact Margaret Nunes, athletic director at Silver Creek, (408) 347-5600.

Give EVHS seniors a piece of your mind (and a job!)

Thirty-five Evergreen Valley High School (EVHS) seniors are participating in a work/study program for high school credit, and 10 seniors still need jobs that offer a minimum of 10 hours of employment a week.

The Work Experience Program, a long-standing program in the East Side Union High School District, is being launched at EVHS for its first senior class. It offers seniors a chance to earn high school credits while getting real-world work experience. Employers benefit from a dedicated, supervised employee and a chance to help the young adults of our community.

Students must be on the payroll of companies who meet a variety of requirements, primarily that they are “real” businesses offering a safe work environment, a place on the official payroll and worker’s compensation insurance. If you have a position or know someone who does, please contact Mark Gross, the program’s supervising teacher at EVHS, via e-mail at grossm@esuhsd.org.

Spaces still available for vendors at Nov. 13-14 EVHS Craft Faire

The Evergreen Valley High School Athl\etic Booster Club still has a few open spaces for any vendors who would like to participate in a two-day Craft Faire on Saturday, Nov. 13 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 14, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Craft Faire will be held at the Evergreen Valley High School gymnasium at 3300 Quimby Rd. (cross-street is Ruby Avenue) in San Jose. The faire is free, there’s plenty of parking and a variety of food will be available throughout the day. Last year, at the very first EVHS Craft Faire, 56 vendors signed up, and the Booster Club expects a minimum of 56 vendors again this year.

The Booster Club is also seeking sponsors who are willing to donate a raffle prize. All proceeds from the booth rental, hourly raffles and concession stand will directly benefit the athletic programs at EVHS.

If you are interested in being a craft vendor or partnering with the school as a sponsor donating raffle prizes, please contact Jane Brehmer at (408) 896-6570 at your earliest convenience. Booth rentals are filling up quickly and raffle donors will be included in the publicity for the show.
