El Camino Youth Symphony at the California Theatre: Following their acclaimed performances this summer at the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest and Dvorak Hall in Prague, the award-winning El Camino Youth Symphony launches its 2005-2006 Season at the California Theatre with a performance from 7:30 – 9:30 p.m. The program includes Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2, Hindemith’s Symphonic metamorphosis of themes by Carl Mara von Weber and solo performances by ECYS Concerto Competition winners Timothy Yu for Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto, mvt.1.and Kenric Tam for Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 2, mvt.1. Santa Clara University Faculty Recital: Piano professor and Music Department Chair Hans Boepple will be performing an evening of classical piano works at 8 p.m. in the Recital Hall. Selections will include Bach’s “Italian Concerto”, Schubert’s “Piano Sonata in A minor”, Brahms’ “Four Piano Pieces”, Op. 119, and Samuel Barber’s “Nocturne” and “Piano Sonata”.

San Jose Stage Company, 490 South First Street, presents “Tenders in the Fog.” Using influences from Beckett to banshees to Bach, local playwright Trevor Allen spins the mystery of the fishing boat Trinity, presumed lost at sea off the foggy San Francisco coast. An ageless shanachie serves as the guide for this Celtic-flavored ghost story of three generations of Irish-American crab fishermen—fathers and sons each named James Bailey—haunted by their stormy pasts. Are the Bailey men tormented by reflections of the women they’ve loved and lost or being lured by ancient Sirens to a watery grave? “Game On: The History and Culture of Videogames.” Explore the history, culture and future of video games at this temporary exhibit. “Game On” is a highly interactive exhibit that examines the exploding video game industry from the game design process and beyond. Come experience the past forty years of electronic gaming, and reflect on where the industry will go next. “Game On” was organized by the Barbican Art Gallery London in collaboration with the National Museums of Scotland. “Game On” will be at The Tech through January 6, 2006.

Oktoberfest returns to downtown Campbell In the grand tradition of the great biergartens of Bavaria, downtown Campbell will once again be filled with the sounds of oompah-pah bands, strolling accordion players, the smell of bratwurst and of course, kegs of Spatan beer. Hours are 10 – 6 on Saturday and 10 – 5 on Sunday, so grab the lederhosen and head for downtown!

Oh Seuss! Off the Great Places, an interactive exhibit, makes its only West Coast appearance at Children’s Discovery Museum of San Jose: In honor of this Seusstacular event, a weekend of special Seuss activities is planned to celebrate the opening of this new exhibit. A host of celebrity readers will be on hand reading their favorite Dr. Seuss books, and host of hands-on literacy activities will be offered through the weekend, including appearances by favorite Seuss characters and fun crafts. 30th Annual Showcase of Miniatures at Parkside Hall: The oldest & largest show and sale of dollhouse miniatures West of the Mississippi – This show will include workshops, children’s workshops, many exhibits and dealers from all over the United States. The Alum Rock Youth Center, 137 North White Road, will be sponsoring “Fright Fest- A Haunted House Festival” from 6 – 10 p.m. This event will feature a Haunted House, Costume Contest, Music, Prizes, Food, Carnival games and a Jump-house. Children and parents can enjoy a safe and fun evening of games, bounce houses, candy-filled piñatas, a crawl through maze, a professional illusionist, a petting zoo, a melodrama, and lots of goodies. Hours are 6 – 9 p.m. The cost is only $7 per person at the door (max. of $28 per family); $5 per person if purchased in advance (max. of $20 per family). Everyone will receive a treat bag with candy. The event will be held at Church on the Hill, 500 Sands Drive in San Jose, near Hwy 87 & Curtner. Guests wearing scary, gruesome, or offensive costumes will not be admitted.

Evergreen Valley Church, 2750 Yerba Buena Road, will be sponsoring a “Trunks & Treat” Festival from 5:30 – 8 p.m.. Car trunks will be loaded with candy for children to do “Trick or Treating” at this fun and safe event. There will be games and a bounce house available as well. Come join us for this family-oriented alternative to the door-to-door option.

Italian courses in Downtown San Jose: Italian Language courses will be offered at Holy Cross Parish, 580 East Jackson St. in San Jose. Beginner’s class meets on Mondays, 9-11a.m. the fee is $144 for 12 classes. Intermediate class meets on Fridays, 9-11 a.m. the fee is also $144 for 12 classes. More than 20 Latino World War II veterans will be publicly honored, and a selection of their personal stories will be digitally aired during a panel discussion at Evergreen Valley College, in the Sequoia Building, Hall S140, at 7:00 p.m. History San José (HSJ) and the Digital Clubhouse Network (DCN) have teamed up with La Raza Roundtable, HACE NASA Ames Research Center and Evergreen Valley College’s Enlace Program to salute Living Latino Legacies: a special program to honor Latino World War II heroes and tell their extraordinary stories of service.

San Jose Tattoo Convention: State of Grace Productions, LLC is proud to present the first ever international tattoo convention in San Jose at Parkside Hall. This event will feature live tattooing by professional tattooers from all over the United States as well as Europe and Japan.
