Bill Highlander is new Evergreen Times Editor

I am pleased to be the editor of the Evergreen Times. While studying for my master’s degree in journalism, I worked at a county weekly newspaper. We had a very small staff so we did everything: writing, editing, photography, layout, etc.

It was fun and I learned readers really enjoyed the local news. I’m sure you’ve read about the challenges major newspapers are facing and the fact that the Internet and electronic media are becoming the major sources of international and national news.

But I believe community journalism still remains strong. I want the Evergreen Times to be your newspaper. It’s where you will read about news that affects you, your family, your neighborhood, your city. The Evergreen Times will have stories and pictures about the activities of interest to you.

I would like to have your input in making this your paper. Let me know about the events you want covered, the issues you want discussed. Write Letters to the Editor to express your views on pertinent subjects. Come discuss with me what’s meaningful to the community at various meetings that will be held. I can’t promise I will act on every suggestion, but I will listen.

Bear with me as I learn the system here and get back in the newspaper mode. From that first reporting job to now, I completed a career as a US Army officer and then as a communications executive with two major companies. So the circle returns with this opportunity. I’m looking forward to bringing to you interesting, entertaining and informative journalism.
