The Tabard Theater open its 8th Season with “Antigone in the Oval Office”: Ancient Greece meets The West Wing as the Vice President is thrust into the Oval Office after the President’s sudden fall from power and faces national crises that become personal very quickly when his goddaughter Antigone challenges his wartime martial law. Warning: This timely translation may lead to heated discussions of parallels and pitfalls. This modern translation of Sophocles’ play by Ian C. Johnston, adapted by Ana-Catrina Buchser is based on a concept by Cathey Spielberger Cassetta. Driected by Buchser, this is the Tabard’s first production in its new home, Theater on San Pedor Square, 29, N. San Pedro Street, San Jose. Scarecrow Contest at Pumpkins in the Park: Attention all classrooms, families, neighborhoods, church groups, clubs, associations, individuals......everyone! Its time to start planning your scarecrows now! For the past 13 years, the scarecrows on “Scarecrow Row” at “Pumpkins in the Park” have grown steadily in quality and quantity. This year’s display promises to be the largest and most creative yet! The Scarecrow Contest will be a feature of the Friends of Guadalupe River Park & Gardens 14th annual “Pumpkins in the Park” event on Oct. 11 at Discovery Meadow. The Scarecrow entries will be judged by the public throughout the day and there will be fun prizes for the winners. The contest is open to anyone & everyone, the more the merrier – entry is free. A Squash By Gosh! The fall and Halloween wouldn’t be the same without these famous squashes. Dig into the ooey gooey goodness of pumpkins as we learn about their origin, history, botany and so much more. Can you guess how many seeds are inside the pumpkin? Or how much it weighs? Join the Friends of the Guadalpue River Park and Gardens as we learn all about these wonderful vegetables. Workshop hours are 3:30 – 5 p.m. and fees are $10/members, $15/non-members. All workshops take place at the Visitor & Education Center located at 438 Coleman Ave, San Jose, CA 95110. Pre-registration is required and parents need not be present during the workshop. Trunk or Treat at Evergreen Valley Church: Everything is free at this Halloween festival for children sponsored and hosted by Evergreen Valley Church. From 6 – 9 p.m. children will walk from car to car and “trick or treat” from trunks in the parking lot for plenty of candy and treats. Each car will be decorated and provide a free game to the kids. Santa Clara County Open Space Authority is looking for people that are interested in trail patrol for hikers, bikers and equestrians. On Oct. 29 from 7- 9 p.m. we will be holding an informational meeting, and on Nov. 8 from 12 - 5p.m. we will be holding a volunteer trail patrol workshop. Learn about Integrated Pest Management for the Home Garden at Metropolitan Adult Education Program’s (MAEP) World Garden Workshop at the Erikson Adult Center, 4849 Pearl Ave, San Jose. Master Gardener Lee Ann Ray will teach gardeners of all skill levels how to manage garden pests. The workshop will cover pest prevention techniques, symptom identification and management methods, low impact solutions to gardening challenges and a discussion on how to enhance your garden’s health. The Almaden Valley Counseling Service will begin its 7-week positive parenting class based on the STEP (Systematic Training for Effective Parenting) model weekly evenings from 7:15 to 9:15 pm. Preschool Class will be held on Monday nights starting Oct. 20; school age class will be held on Wednesday nights starting October 22; teen class will be held on Thursday nights starting October 23. Northern California Renaissance Faire returns to Case de Fruta: This living history festival includes everything from live comedy and improv to dramatic performances, traditional Elizabethan fare and English ales plus a host of pretty maidens, strolling minstrels, gallant knights and swashbucklers galore. The 2008 Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon begins with the wheel chair invitational at 7:55 a.m. followed by the half marathon at 8 a.m. the course starts on Santa Clara Street at Almaden Avenue in San Jose. Immediately following the race, Creedence Clearwater Revisited will be the headline entertainment for the post race concert at the Plaza de Cesar Chavez stage. The concert is free and open to all. In addition to live bands and water stations along the scenic course through San Jose, high school cheerleading squads will be on-site to provide further entertainment and motivation to runners and walkers. Esther Dickler releases her second book “From My Window in Paris.”: The public is invited to a presentation and booksigning of South Bay author Esther Dickler’s new release “From My Window in Paris.” Dickler will share the misadventures and laughter as well as the brave adventure for a single woman with no knowledge of the language. She lived in the City of Lights for one year and learned to love life again. “From My Window in Paris” is a sequel to “Please Leave Me…Don’t” which chronicled her psychological and physical struggles she endured caring for her husband alone. The Lace Museum is calling for entries in its juried show for dolls dressed in Victorian clothing to be used in the December exhibit, “Victorian Lace Remembered.” The exhibit runs from Nov. 15 through Jan. 9 and is held at the museum. Entries will be selected for appropriateness to the theme of “Victorian Lace Remembered.” Winners will be featured in the exhibit. Pictures of all entries must be received by Oct. 15. Selection by jury will take place that week. Notification of acceptance into the exhibit will be issued on Oct. 21. Dolls must be hand delivered to the museum Nov. 7-8 and may be picked up after the exhibit on Jan. 10, 2009.
