Blessing of the Animals kicks off event
St. Francis of Assisi celebrates annual feast day with ‘A Taste of Italy’

Special to the Times
Every year St. Francis of Assisi Parish celebrates its patron saint on his feast day by throwing a party open to everyone in the community—our parishioners, friends and neighbors in Evergreen.
The “Blessing of the Animals” kicks off this year’s annual feast day celebration on Saturday, Oct. 2 at 9 a.m.
This unique experience is open to all who wish to bring their pets between 9 and 10 a.m. You may meet horses, rats, cats, dogs or even iguanas, all of which have participated in past “Blessing of the Animals” celebrations in recognition of St. Francis of Assisi’s love for all creatures.
The church cannot accommodate animals after 10 a.m, so for your pet’s safety and well being, pet-owners should arrange to bring their pets home after they have received the blessing.
The remaining festivities begin at 11 a.m. and run until 4 p.m. Food booths, beverage stands, children’s games and crafts, bocce ball, and entertainment will reflect this year’s theme, “A Taste of Italy.”
This family event is not a fundraiser and is subsidized by donations, so food and beverage prices will be below cost. An opportunity drawing with cash prizes, a raffle and a silent auction of themed baskets, filled with valuable merchandise and gift certificates, will add excitement to the day.
The church will also set up large yellow tubs in various locations to collect non-perishable food items. Please help us fill these barrels, as all the donations will help feed those in need at the San Jose Family Shelter and Sacred Heart Community Services.
There will be something for everyone this year at St. Francis’ “A Taste of Italy” fiesta.
Organizers encourage guests to tour the peaceful Memorial Garden and parish vineyard, admire original artwork and views of the hills and sit down at one of the many tables to eat, drink and enjoy the diverse entertainment. All are welcome!
