Reid-Hillview Airport Day is Sept. 25
Community invited to open house

Reid-Hillview Airport, the light-plane airport north of Eastridge Shopping Mall, will hold its 11th annual open house on Saturday, Sept. 25, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. It’s an opportunity for Evergreen residents to see what is going on at a friendly yet busy little airport that’s been in operation since 1939.

This year, Reid-Hillview Airport Day will feature displays of antique, experimental and modern light airplanes, helicopters, home-built aircraft and old cars and motorcycles parked on the ramp. Visitors also can take guided tours of the airport control tower.

Demonstrations of aerobatic flight by radio-controlled model aircraft will be held at 1 p.m. Among the models will be a tiny jet, a flying doghouse and a flying lawn mower.

A number of organizations, including the Experimental Aircraft Association, Santa Clara Valley Ninety-nines, the San Jose State University Precision Flight Team and the San Jose Search and Rescue Team will have displays and information booths. Nationally known skydiver Allen Silver will be the event’s play-by-play announcer.

The Reid-Hillview Airport Association will offer 15-cent-a-pound airplane rides. Amelia Reid Aviation will offer biplane flights in a restored 1929 Waco.

The Experimental Airplane Association will serve a pancake breakfast from 8- to 10:30 a.m. for a nominal fee.

Proceeds from the breakfast will fund scholarships for high school students pursuing a career in aviation. Red Robin will be offering a hamburger/hot dog lunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission and parking are free.

The entrance to Reid-Hillview Airport is at Capitol Expressway and Cunningham Avenue, north of Tully Road. For more information, contact Michelle Reid (408) 828-6617.

The Reid-Hillview Airport Association (RHVAA) is a not-for-profit organization whose goals are the betterment of the quality of the airport, its users, its management, and most important, its neighbors.
