CMTSJ fall classes for ages 4-20 begin Oct. 3

Children’s Musical Theater San Jose (CMTSJ) is now accepting registrations for affordable performing arts classes for beginning and intermediate students ages 4-20. Instruction begins Oct. 3. All classes are held at the CMTSJ Rehearsal Hall, 1401 Parkmoor Ave. in mid-town San Jose.

New this quarter, in response to community requests, are Sunday afternoon classes for every age group. Specialty classes for older children and teens include British dialects, tap dance and group voice and audition skills workshops.
The fall schedule also includes general musical theater skills classes for Tiny Tots (ages 4-5), Junior Talents (ages 6-8) and Rising Stars (ages 10-12). These nine-week classes combine singing, dancing and acting and conclude with a recital, making them a perfect choice for beginning students who would like to try musical theater. For most classes, no prior experience is required.

Classes are priced from $75 – $125. Some scholarships are available through CMTSJ. Many sections fill quickly, so interested students should apply early. To register by mail or fax, download the registration form from the Web at http://www.cmtsj.org. For more information about classes, call (408) 288-5437 ext. 318.

SJ East/Evergreen Rotary Club’s Open House Sept. 21

San Jose East / Evergreen Rotary usually meets every Tuesday at the San Jose Country Club on Alum Rock Road from noon until 1:30 p.m. On Tuesday, Sept. 21, in an effort to expand its membership, an Open House for interested
guests will be held instead of the regular meeting format.

Guests will be able to talk to SJE/E Rotary members and view photograph display panels that highlight Rotary projects. They will also be able to see where SJE/E Rotary is involved in helping those in our local communities and in our communities abroad. Hors d’oeuvres and beverages will be served.

“We will be asking guests how we can help them in their businesses and/or in their community involvement,” explained SJE/E President Maggie Wilhelm. “At the Open House we will be showing our guests what we have done and what we are doing in our local communities and in our communities abroad. San Jose East / Evergreen Rotary is building bridges with our local communities.”

Individuals who would like to receive an invitation to attend can call Wilhelm at (408) 639-8383.

Free community workshop

‘The Casualties of War: Healing and Hope in the Midst of Trauma’
With death tolls exceeding 1,000 from the war in Iraq, and the three-year anniversary of 9-11 upon us, we are facing the traumatic aftermath of being at war. Issues such as death, living with change, the threat of violence and deployment of loved ones overseas—as well as sudden or traumatic incidents—confront us.

The Centre for Living With Dying in Santa Clara is offering a free community workshop on Thursday, Sept. 23, from 6- to 9 p.m. to:

- Explore life-affirming coping tools,

- Identify how to recognize stress and grief responses in yourself and others, as well as identify positive action steps for healing.

Managing Loss and Change workshop
The Centre will also be offering a two-hour workshop entitled “Managing Loss and Change” on Thursday, Sept. 30, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. designed specifically for those who are dealing with a particular loss. The cost is $25.

Grief is the natural, human response to any loss or change. Issues such as death, living with a serious illness, job loss or change, separation, divorce, violence and sudden or traumatic incidents confront us both personally and professionally on a daily basis.

The Centre for Living with Dying, a program of the Bill Wilson Center, is located at the James Lick Mansion, 554 Mansion Park Dr., Santa Clara, CA 95054. Call (408) 980-9801 for more information or visit the Web site: www.thecentre.org. For almost 30 years, the Centre has provided support, intervention and education on the issues of loss, death, illness, grief, stress and change for the community as well as for professionals on the front lines.
