The East Side Union High School District recently added the final member to Superintendent Esperanza Zendejas’ cabinet with the of hiring Jack Mahrt as chief financial officer.

“We are pleased to welcome to the East Side Union High School District family an individual with very strong and extensive experience in the field of business related functions,” stated Zendejas.

Mahrt brings to the district 28 years of service garnered from a number of positions, from financial analyst in the Fresno Unified School District to his most recent position as vice chancellor of business services for West Hills Community College District in Coalinga.

Mahrt, who is married and has two children, grew up in the San Joaquin Valley. You’re invited to the fourth annual Parent Empowerment Conference

Give EVHS seniors a piece of your mind (and a job!)

Thirty-five Evergreen Valley High School (EVHS) seniors are participating in a work/study program for high school credit, and 10 seniors still need jobs that offer a minimum of 10 hours of employment a week.

The Work Experience Program, a long-standing program in the East Side Union High School District, is being launched at EVHS for its first senior class. It offers seniors a chance to earn high school credits while getting real world work experience. Employers benefit from a dedicated, supervised employee and a chance to help the young adults of our community.

Students must be on the payroll of companies who meet a variety of requirements, primarily that they are “real” businesses offering a safe work environment, a place on the official payroll and worker’s compensation insurance. If you have a position or know someone who does, please contact Mark Gross, the program’s supervising teacher at EVHS, via e-mail at grossm@esuhsd.org.

Spaces available for vendors at Nov. 13-14 EVHS Craft Faire

The Evergreen Valley High School Athletic Booster Club still has a few open spaces for any vendors who would like to participate in a two-day Craft Faire on Saturday, Nov. 13 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 14, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Craft Faire will be held at the Evergreen Valley High School gymnasium at 3300 Quimby Rd. (cross-street is Ruby Avenue) in San Jose. The Faire is free, there’s plenty of parking, and variety of food will be available throughout the day. Last year at the very first EVHS Craft Faire, 56 vendors signed up. The Booster Club expects a minimum of 56 vendors again this year.

The Booster Club is also seeking sponsors who are willing to donate a raffle prize. All proceeds from the booth rental, hourly raffles and concession stand will directly benefit the athletic programs at EVHS.

If you are interested in being a craft vendor or partnering with the school as a sponsor donating raffle prizes, please contact Jane Brehmer at (408) 896-6570. Booth rentals are filling up quickly and raffle donors will be included in the publicity for the show.

ESUHSD schools all exceed API targets

The East Side Union High School District is proud to report that all of the district’s comprehensive schools exceeded their 2004 API (Academic Performance Indicator) target.

Since 1999, the API results have been used by the state to monitor the academic growth of all schools.

“We still have a lot of work to do, and we will continue to pursue the highest levels of academic expectations possible,” said ESUHSD Superintendent Esperanza Zendejas. “Many individuals in our district continue their hard work to support the ongoing efforts of academic performance for all students. We must also give credit where credit is due, so a special thanks goes to our teachers for their tremendous work.”
