It was a hot afternoon and the bandstand was situated to protect the instruments. Many attendees sought the shade along the tree-lined walkway bordering the Guadeloupe River.
Others brought umbrellas or just basked in the sun in Discovery Meadow as the orchestra played classical favorites.
The Target mascot appeared as a guest conductor for the William Tell Overture to the delight of the crowd. The children particularly liked his antics as they listened to what is fondly known as the Lone Ranger’s theme.
According to Andrew Bales, president of Symphony Silicon Valley, the sponsor Target was very pleased with the event and the success could lead to future concerts for San Jose and the symphony.
Symphony Silicon Valley opens its sixth season on Sept 27 with a gala dinner and a performance of “Dances at an Opening.” The newly rebuilt Wurlitzer organ will play in the theater lobby prior to the concert.
