Evergreen Times moves to bi-weekly format after 22 years
By Bea Baechle
Editor
The Evergreen Times, now in its 22nd year of operation, is transitioning from a monthly publication to a bi-weekly newspaper in September. The increased frequency reflects the need to expand coverage of the fastest growing community in San Jose.
“There are a lot of things happening in the Evergreen and Silver Creek communities, and unfortunately, some of the information hasn’t been covered because of the lack of editorial space or the timing of an event,” said Publisher Bill Bellou, who created the first issue of the Evergreen Times in November 1982.
“There’s such a hunger for community news and features, because other media sources typically cover larger geographic areas and focus less on local news,” continued Bellou.
A circulation of 8,000 newspapers covered all the homes in Evergreen 22 years ago. Today, nearly 30,000 full-color issues of the Evergreen Times will be delivered 26 times a year. It will reach more than 90,000 potential readers each issue, based on an average of 3.2 readers per household.
The Evergreen Times will be printed every other Friday, and editorial deadlines will be on alternate Fridays between those print days.
We’re on the Web
To further expand its reach, the Evergreen Times is now also available on the Web at www.evergreentimes.com. On this site you can access current and past articles, send letters to the editor or provide story leads and press releases to the Times.
The Web site is also an outstanding way for friends and relatives outside of Evergreen to read about your community. And for those who have retired and moved away from this area, what better way to stay connected?
What’s new
Look for a few new features in this issue. “Street Talk” (page 34) poses a question to residents at random, seeking their opinions on a variety of issues. The venues for each “Street Talk” will change to different parts of Evergreen and Silver Creek.
“Paths to Evergreen” (page 3) is a new history column authored by Evergreen Historian Colleen Cortese. Over the years, Cortese has collected stockpiles of historical facts, anecdotes, illustrations and photos that she is ready to share with the Evergreen community once a month.
“The Best Wealth is Your Health” (page 37) will explore a variety of different health topics, typically written by health practitioners based in Evergreen. If there are specific topics that you’d like to see covered, contact the Evergreen Times.
Next issue
In the next issue of the Evergreen Times, watch for the new “Pet of the Month,” “Volunteer of the Month” and “Teacher of the Month” columns. For these columns to be successful, we’d like you to send us your candidates.
Tell us why you feel someone should be considered for Teacher of the Month or Volunteer of the Month. What have they done to set them apart from the average person? If you have a pet, what makes your pet the smartest or cutest animal on the planet? Send a picture and short description of why your pet deserves to be Pet of the Month. Winning candidates in these categories will be rewarded!
“Street Scenes,” also appearing in the next issue, focuses on a specific street in Evergreen. What makes your street special? The location? The neighbors? The community activism? The parties? The kids?
The staff at the Evergreen Times hopes you’re as excited about our increased frequency as we are! Send your ideas, candidates for monthly columns, and feedback to Bea Baechle, editor, at bea@timesmediainc.com, and watch for your next issue of the Evergreen Times in mid-September—in print or at www.evergreentimes.com.
