Evergreen Valley Recreation Club reopens after two-year lapse

Accepting new pool members

More than two years after the Evergreen Valley Recreation Club was ravaged by arson, the private neighborhood swimming pool reopened on Saturday, July 30.

Mariana Dekker enjoys the baby pool with her son Elim, her baby Chloe and Danielle Borden.

EVRC hopes to add 50 new members at the prorated fee of $250 for the remainder of the season, which has been extended to Oct. 30 due to the belated opening date.

In addition to the main attractions—a heated swimming pool and a separate baby pool—the club includes a brand new shower and bathroom structure, a covered picnic area, plus volleyball, basketball, tetherball and badminton equipment.

“I am truly delighted to report that we are open,” said Board President Kris Anderson, who has been shepherding the very lengthy process of obtaining permits and rebuilding, for the new and improved pool.

To thwart another incident of arson, the pool will include additional fencing where the club’s property meets Thompson Creek. Board member Bob Babcock donated 60 feet of chain link fence to go on the inside of the wooden fence to further thwart vandalism. New security monitors and sensor lights will also be installed.

Tucked away at 3380 Woodside Lane near Kettmann and Aborn roads, this quiet oasis in Evergreen had originally been built decades ago as a neighborhood cabana. Now available to all residents interested in paid membership, it reopened completely compliant with American Disabilities Act requirements, including a lift for safe handicap access to the pool.

“I’m just thrilled that the pool is open. The board worked very hard to get it open this year,” said EVRC member Diane Gallatin.

Hours of operation will be 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. for the summer. This is a family facility with no lifeguard on duty, so parents are responsible for their children under the ages of 18.
