Undefeated Evergreen Senior Braves capture 2008 Tournament of Champions

The Tournament of Cham-pions game between the Evergreen Little League Sr. Braves and the Sr. Oak Valley team left no doubt who was the champion in District 59. The Braves posted a convincing 11 to 1 win over Oak Valley.

The Braves scored early with three consecutive singles in the first inning by Pablo Valenzuela, Alex Rayfield and Joe Mahany. A two-out double by Cole Nicholson brought home both Rayfield and Mahany, making the score 3 to 1.

The undefeated Evergreen Senior Braves captured the 2008 Tournament of Champions with a 11 to 1 win over Oak Valley.

The Braves struck again in the third inning when Sheldon Daquioag started with a leadoff single, followed with singles by Rayfield and Mahany. Andrew Sotelo doubled, adding three more runs. Braves scored again in the fourth when Victor Valladares hit a single followed by a triple by Daquioag. The next batter, Rayfield, slammed a double into the outfeld, scoring Daquioag and running the score 8 to 1.

In the fifth inning, singles by Steve Rocha, Kevin O’Hara and Eddie Duran got two more runs across the plate. In the bottom of the of the sixth, singles by Nicholson and O’Hara got things going followed by the game winning hit by Duran scoring Nicholson. This gave the Braves a 10-run lead and the game was over. Little League rules allow a game to be called if a team is leading by 10 or more runs after five full innings.

Sheldon Daquioag pitched a complete game giving up only three hits while recording eight strikeouts. Dominic Taguinod made some spectacular plays in field and Felix Valencia came through with some clutch hits during the season. Cody Wong was one of the best pitchers on the team.

The Braves finished the regular season and TOC with a perfect 16 win and no loss record. Braves scored a combined 168 runs while giving up on 58 during the 16 win season. The Braves are managed by CC Ching with coaches Andrew Sotelo and J.J. Ferguson.


PAL football starts season

East Hills Wolfpack needs kids 8-14 for PAL football league. This is a great opportunity for participants to learn the fundamentals and skills needed to be a successful football player, as well as learning teamwork and the benefits of setting goals and achieving them.

Practice started Monday, July 21st, but it is not too late! Come out and see us on the Mt. Pleasant High School football field, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Check out our web site at www.ehfootball.org.

The Lance Armstrong Foundation comes to San Jose July 13
Cyclists, runners, walkers, cancer survivors and spectators of all ages are invited to join Lance Armstrong at the San Jose LIVESTRONG Challenge, hosted by the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) and presented by Nike. A post-Challenge celebration featuring food, drinks and live entertainment will immediately follow. Event hours are 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Festival Area at S. Almaden Blvd. and Park Ave. in San Jose. For more information and to register for the LIVESTRONG Challenge, visit www.livestrongchallenge.org/sanjose. Each Challenge participant is required to pay a $50 registration fee. There is an additional $250 fundraising minimum for cyclists, but no further fundraising requirement for walkers and runners, though everyone is encouraged to raise funds. Participants can register individually or as a team, choosing to bike 10, 40, 70 or 100 miles, or walk or run in the community 5K. The combined walk/run allows individuals of all fitness levels to participate. In addition to walking, running and riding, the LAF urges members of the community to volunteer and cheer on participants during the event.
