NEWS BRIEFS
National Night Out 2008
On Tuesday, Aug. 5, neighborhoods throughout San Jose are invited to join forces with thousands of communities nationwide for the “25th Annual National Night Out.” National Night Out will involve over 10,000 communities from all 50 States, U.S. Territories, Canadian cities and military bases around the world. In all, over 34 million people are expected to participate in “America’s Night Out Against Crime.”
National Night Out is designed to: (1) Heighten crime and drug awareness; (2) Generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime efforts; (3) Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police/community partnerships; and (4) Send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
From 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on August 5th, residents in neighborhoods throughout San Jose and across the nation are asked to lock their doors, turn on outside lights and spend an evening outside with neighbors and police. Many neighborhoods throughout San Jose will be hosting a variety of special events such as block parties, cookouts, ice cream socials, barbecues and informal gatherings.
Last year approximately 60 San Jose neighborhoods showed their support for National Night Out by enjoying an evening with their neighbors and local police officers.
To include your neighborhood in this year’s event register on line at www.sjpd.org or contact the San Jose Police
Department Crime Prevention Unit at (408) 277-4133. Join us on Tuesday, Aug. 5 and Give Crime and Drugs A Going-Away Party.
