EVHS freshman honored by U.S. Achievement Academy

Evergreen resident Winnie Trieu was recently named a U.S. national award winner in English by the United States Achievement Academy, which recognizes fewer than 10 percent of American high school students with this honor.

Winnie Trieu recently became a U.S. national award winner in the United States Achievement Academy.

Trieu’s freshman English teacher at Evergreen Valley High School, Teresa Knooptroullier, nominated her for the prestigious honor.

“Recognizing and supporting our youth is more important than ever before in America’s history,” said George Stevens, executive director of the academy. “United States Achievement Academy winners should be congratulated and appreciated for their dedication to excellence and achievement.”

The Academy selects USAA winners upon the exclusive recommendation of teachers, coaches, counselors and other qualified sponsors. The criteria for selection are a student’s academic performance, interest and aptitude, leadership qualities, responsibility, enthusiasm, motivation to learn and improve, citizenship, attitude and cooperative spirit, dependability and recommendation from a teacher or director.

Trieu, the daughter of Ken and Bic Trieu and granddaughter of Huynh K. Trieu and Kien and Son Nguyen, grew up in Evergreen. She attended Evergreen Elementary School and LeyVa Middle School, and will return as a sophomore to Evergreen Valley High School.

She has played piano for almost 10 years and swims for West Coast Aquatics and the EVHS swim team. She was also recommended for “Who’s Who Among American High School Students” for the 2004-05 academic year.
