Deputies Catch Wrong Way Driver in Stolen Car

A deputy patrolling in the unincorporated East Foothills was in for a surprise when a red Toyota Tercel driving westbound in the eastbound lanes of Alum Rock Avenue passed his patrol car on July 5.

After passing the patrol car in the wrong direction, the Toyota slowly drifted back to the westbound side of Alum Rock and ran a red light at Alexander Avenue. The deputy made a vehicle enforcement stop on the Toyota.

Angel Fuentes

Upon approaching the car, the deputy found 23-year-old Angel Fuentes in the driver’s seat. As he was asking Fuentes to turn off the car, the deputy realized the car had no keys in the ignition, a telltale sign of a stolen car.

Inside the car, deputies found a window punching tool, screwdrivers and other auto burglary tools. Fuentes had a syringe on his person and displayed the signs and symptoms of stimulant drug use.

Deputies discovered that the car was just stolen a few blocks away from their location. The victim had not yet noticed his car had been stolen.

Fuentes, who was on probation for a prior car theft, was arrested and booked into the main jail on charges of auto theft, possession of burglary tools, possession of a hypodermic needle and being under the influence of a controlled substance. Source: Santa Clara County Sheriff’s office
