Accepted members are given a Performance Season, Choreography Opportunities, Cultural Events and Travel. THEATER

July 13 – August 4
The Sixth Annual Los Gatos Shakespeare Festival presents three plays in repertory for its 2007 season in Oak Meadow Park, Los Gatos. Opening the season is William Shakespeare’s romantic adventure story, “Pericles, Prince of Tyre”, presented in the classical storytelling style of the 1001 Arabian Nights and directed by Bruce De Les Dernier. Following will be the timeless tale of power and politics, "Julius Caesar." The season will also include the rollicking comedy “Tartuffe” by Moliere; directed by Amy Himes. The festival has a number of free events lined up this season, including a stage reading of one of next years’ productions “The Further Adventures of the Three Musketeers”; as well as our Camp Shakespeare youth conservatory class performances. Barnes & Noble Eastridge Mall will stay open late to sell copies of Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows at the stroke of midnight. The store will hold a Midnight Magic costume party with special Harry Potter events, activities, contests and more. Special activities begin at 7 p.m. with Harry Potter story time. Customers will need to check in at our check in tables located at our Parking Lot and Mall entrances and will receive a wristband along with an event schedule and other goodies.

August 13 – 17
The Friends of Guadalupe River Park & Gardens will offer a week-long summer day camp for children ages 7-10 in San Jose’s Guadalupe River Park. Take a look back in time as we explore prehistoric beasts, uncover the lives of the Ohlone, Spanish and Chinese, and visit the Peralta Adobe. Take a trip inside a flower, dig up the dirt on worms, and do water tests on the Guadalupe River. The fee for camp is $200/child. SeniorNet, computer classes for adults 50 and over will hold course registration at the Almaden Community Center located at 6445 Camden Avenue. Attention recently retired or semi retired men! Sons in retirement (SIRS) meets on the second Thursday of each month at the Elks Club, 444 West Alma in San Jose for lunch. Join us for good food, great speakers and the chance to meet new friends. SIRS has many activities including bowling, golf computer clubs. SIRS has no initiation fees or dues. The Evergreen Community Center, 4860 San Felipe Road in San Jose offers a variety of classes and special monthly events, as well as a Senior Nutrition Program. The Nutrition Program serves a delicious and well-balanced meal to seniors 60 and over every Monday – Friday at noon. The suggested donation is $2 per person. Eastside Neighborhood Center of Catholic Charities, 2150 Alum Rock Avenue in San Jose offers a variety of activities and services for seniors on an ongoing basis. These include Bingo, Free legal assistance, Senior club dancing, Senior Care Advocacy, Nutrition Programs, Nurse Screenings, Free Insurance Screenings, and more. The San Jose Widow/Widowers Club meets at 12:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of every month for lunch at the Cup & Saucer Restaurant, 1375 Blossom Hill Road in Princeton Plaza. AARP Information Center needs volunteers to staff their office. Duties include helping seniors find various services and programs, and providing information on senior needs. The office is located at 840 Willow Street, Suite 300, at the corner of Bird and Willow Streets on bus route #25. VOLUNTEERS

Ongoing
Kaiser South Bay Hospice Programs is in need of volunteers. Sites are located in San Jose, Santa Clara and Redwood City. All volunteers are trained at no cost and participants are provided ongoing support and education. Volunteers go to patient and family homes providing helpful support in kind, caring ways. Free Electronic Waste Recycling Event: Sponsored by the Volunteer Center of Silicon Valley in partnership with council member Dave Cortese and the District 8 Neighborhood Associations, this event will be held at Eastridge Mall parking lot at Tully and Capitol from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Items accepted include desktops, laptops, printers, faxes, stereo equipment, cell phones and much more. It’s the festival you can smell a mile away! Gilroy’s 29th annual Garlic Festival is hailed as the “ultimate summer food fair”, and once again promises three days of incredible food, beverages, arts and crafts and live entertainment. This event is held at Christmas Hill Park, 30 miles south of San Jose off Highway 101. Hoursa re 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. all days. Tickets are $112 general, $6 for seniors and students ages 6 – 12 years.
