Evergreen K-5 kids head to first local Camp Galileo

Richard Guzikowski attends a modern art class at Camp Galileo at James F. Smith Elementary School. Guzikowski, as will as the rest of his colleagues, learn about different modern artists and how to express themselves by creating projects that are meaningful to them.

Camp Galileo—combining programs from the Tech Museum of Innovation, Art in Action and Klutz—continues through July 22 at James F. Smith Elementary.

This is Camp Galileo’s first summer in Evergreen. This art, science and outdoor summer day camp began in Palo Alto in 2002 and now operates in 10 cities throughout the Bay Area. The idea originated as more and more schools deemphasized art, science and outdoor programming.

“These subjects are so important to the development of children. We wanted kids to experience these subjects in a fun environment. We also found that the combination of art, science and the outdoors is attractive to many types of kids,” explains Glen Tripp, the CEO and founder of Galileo Educational Services.

Parents voted Camp Galileo “Best Camp for Kids” in Bay Area Parent magazine in 2004. The camp also surveyed parents last summer and found more than 95 percent would recommend it to another family.

“It’s amazing to see the creative solutions kids come up with, from towers out of balsa wood that withstand an earthquake shake table test to amazing Rube Goldberg machines,” notes Bridget Rigby, the Evergreen area director. “They learn from trial and error testing and as much from succeeding as failing.”
