First Annual Sicilian Golf Festival
The Sons of Sicily are launching their First Annual Sicilian Golf Festival to celebrate their 30th anniversary. This wonderful day of golf, contests, hearty food and laughs will be held on Monday, Aug. 8, at the Santa Clara Golf & Tennis Club.
Foursomes and individual players are welcome at $135 per player. This price includes green fees, tee prizes, shared cart, lunch and dinner. The format is a four-person, modified scramble.
Awards will be given for the low gross team score, longest drive, closest to the pin, best putter and more, including $10,000 for a Hole in One! Individuals as well as teams are welcome. There will also be a special presentation of awards to those students who have been recipients of the Sons of Sicily Scholarship program.
Not a golfer? You can also purchase just the dinner ticket for $35 and join the Sons for a delicious dinner, tournament awards presentation, Sons of Sicily 2005 Scholarship presentation and an exciting raffle immediately following the tournament at the Santa Clara Golf & Tennis banquet hall.
The S.O.S. Club is also seeking sponsors and or prizes for this event. Any donated prizes or sponsorships will directly benefit the Sons of Sicily’s scholarship programs.
As a non-profit organization, the Sons of Sicily provides youth scholarships for member’s families and contributes to numerous charitable organizations. The various levels of sponsorship packages can be viewed at: www.sonsofsicily.golfreg.com.

New Fire Station 36 community meeting June 22
On Tuesday, June 22, you’re invited to join Councilmember Dave Cortese and the City of San Jose Fire Chief for an overview and community discussion about the planned construction of a new fire station on the southeast corner of Yerba Buena and Silver Creek Roads.
The meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. at James F. Smith Elementary School, 2220 Woodbury Lane. The construction of Fire Station 36 will:
- Improve response times to medical and fire emergencies
- Create a 24-hour public safety presence
- Add a community room
- Enhance training opportunities.

Eastridge job fair at Evergreen Valley College June 23
To gear up for its interior opening in August, Eastridge Shopping Mall will hold a free job fair on Thursday, June 23, from noon to 4 p.m. at the Gullo Student Center of Evergreen Valley College, 3095 Yerba Buena Road.
Store representatives will be available to take resumes and answer questions about part- and full-time opportunities in retail sales and store management for many of its new and existing merchants.
Companies will include American Eagle, Sears, Starbucks, LIDS, New York & Company, World Foot Locker and Zales.

HFSV seeks Latina candidates for college scholarships
June 24 application deadline
The Hispanic Foundation of Silicon Valley’s 2005 scholarship program aims to assist Latinas in higher education who are taking a non-traditional path to achieving a degree.
Three $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to Latinas attending, entering or re-entering a community college or four-year college or university in Santa Clara County and meeting at least one of the following eligibility requirements:
- Had children prior to or while attending college
- Has proclaimed through her college institution that she is pursuing teaching credentials
- Is over 30 years old
- Has been previously enrolled in higher education and has returned or is attempting to return after having taken three or more years off from school
