New EVC president to start July 18

Michael Hill, acting chancellor of the San Jose/Evergreen Community College District, recently announced that David Wain Coon has been selected as the new president of Evergreen Valley College.

David Wain Coon will begin serving as the president of Evergreen Valley College on July 18.

“I am pleased to have the opportunity to serve Evergreen Valley College in the role of president. I look forward to working with all members of the college community in building upon the college’s reputation for excellence and commitment to the success of students,” said Coon.

Coon is currently Cascadia Community College’s vice president for student success, where he provides leadership to college relations and outreach, enrollment services, student financial services, advising and assessment and student programs.

He previously served at Green River Community College as the executive dean of student services. Prior to Green River, he held the positions of vice president/dean of student services at the Art Institute of Seattle and director of student development at Pierce College in Lakewood.

Coon has a bachelor’s degree in communications and public relations from Central Washington University, a master’s degree in college student personnel administration from Western Washington University and a doctorate in educational leadership from Seattle University.

Dr. Coon replaces John Kangas, who has served as interim president since November of 2004. Kangas will return to his regular position as associate vice chancellor of research and planning for the San Jose/Evergreen Community College District office in San Jose.

“Dr. Coon’s educational credentials, his wide variety of experience, and his demonstrated commitment to diversity make him the right president at the right time for Evergreen Valley College,” said San Jose Evergreen Community College District President Ron Lind.

Coon was selected after a national search and several rounds of interviews and forums with college staff and faculty and the district’s governing board. He will begin serving as president of Evergreen College July 18.
