San Jose Rep brings the 2007 Pulitzer® Prize Winner for Drama, “Rabbit Hole”, to Bay Area audiences, Showing May 12 - June 10, David Lindsay-Abaire’s 2006 Tony® Award nominated play is teeming with wit, compassion and honesty. Becca and Howie have everything a family could want until fate shatters the balance and leaves the couple drifting perilously apart. “Rabbit Hole” chronicles the family’s bittersweet, rich and often funny journey through grief. But it is most of all a story of hope, reminding us of the power of the human spirit to heal and get back to the business of living. “Rabbit Hole” is directed by Kirsten Brandt, resident director at San Jose Rep. California Theatre Center (CTC) presents “The Woman in Black,” returning to Sunnyvale by popular demand is of one of CTC’s greatest hits! A thrilling, edge-of-your seat ghost story! Performances are May 31 (Preview), June 1 (Opening) and selected dates through July 26. California Theatre Center (CTC) presents “They're Playing Our Song”. This Broadway hit musical by Neil Simon, Marvin Hamlisch and Carol Bayer Sager is based on the real-life relationship of songwriters Hamlisch and Sager. Composer Vernon who is in need of a new lyricist, meets kooky, incurable romantic Sonia, and they dislike each other at first sight. Clearly the match is not one made in heaven! The two undergo a series of trials and overcome a number of hurdles before finding true love by the final curtain. Performances are June 7 (Preview), 8 (Opening), with various dates continuing through July 27. Matinees performances are also available. The new Santa Teresa Farmers’ Market is opening at the Kaiser Permanente facility in San Jose at the corner of Santa Teresa Blvd and Camino Verde. It will run every Saturday from 9am to 1pm through November 17, so bring the whole family down for food and fun.

June – August
Escape to another world right in San José as History San José and Happy Hollow Park & Zoo partner to offer low-cost access to two of San Jose’s most significant attractions---all inside Kelley Park. On the second Tuesday of June, July and August, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., combined admission to all of Kelley Park is only $1.00 per person--- which includes Happy Hollow Park & Zoo and History Park. Youth Science Institute is taking registrations now for their Summer Science Camps! Designed for children ages 3 ½ to 14, there are over 35 camps to choose from. Camps include Bugology, Mighty Forest, Science Sleuths and Wild Wonders, just to name a few. Children enjoy the wonders of science and the natural world with hands-on projects, experiments, crafts, hikes and games. Camp fees range from $130 to $205 per week. Camps start the week of June 18th and run through August 17th at each of YSI’s Science and Nature Centers, located at Alum Rock Park in San Jose, Sanborn Park in Saratoga and Vasona Park in Los Gatos. Summer is the time for California Theatre Center’s exciting and educational Summer Theatre Conservatory Program. Based in Sunnyvale, California Theatre Center (CTC) has offered its hands-on theatre Conservatories for ages 8 and up for over twenty years. By popular demand CTC now offers 2-week-long, half-day/ morning Junior Conservatories for ages 6-8. Registrations are currently being accepted at 245-2979. CTC’s regular Summer Conservatory is a three-week-long intensive workshop for young people ages 8 and up (must turn 8 by July 1, 2007) who are interested in developing and improving theatre skills. Conservatory students will work directly under the supervision of professional CTC company members to produce and act in their own production, culminating in public performances at the end of their Conservatory session. Conservatories are held from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm five days a week at a number of locations throughout the South Bay including San Jose, Sunnyvale, Saratoga and Los Altos. Join the Master Gardeners of Santa Clara County and Friends of Guadalupe River Park & Gardens for a Container Gardening Workshop using succulents. Bring your own unusual treasures to use for containers and you’ll be inspired to learn how almost anything can be used for a container garden. There will be ready made examples to get your creative juices flowing. We’ll provide the supplies and you’ll go home with your own creation. Yoga in the Park- Friends of Guadalupe River Park & Gardens presents this gentle introduction to yoga led by instructor Kristin Strellis. This course is designed to improve your flexibility, balance and relaxation. All necessary equipment will be provided for your use. Please dress in comfortable clothing and be ready to stretch and relax. This class will be taught outside on the grass. Sessions are held Thursdays from 6:15 – 7 p.m. Cost is $30 for GRPG members and $35 for non-members. Pre-registration is required and participants must be 18 years of age or older. Strength Training on the Guadalupe River Park Trail - Learn safe muscle toning and strength building exercises using fitness bands and park features. Instructor Kristin Strellis welcomes all levels of fitness. You will be provided with a fitness band to keep. Attention recently retired or semi retired men! Sons in retirement (SIRS) meets on the second Thursday of each month at the Elks Club, 444 West Alma in San Jose for lunch. Join us for good food, great speakers and the chance to meet new friends. SIRS has many activities including bowling, golf computer clubs. SIRS has no initiation fees or dues. The Evergreen Community Center, 4860 San Felipe Road in San Jose offers a variety of classes and special monthly events, as well as a Senior Nutrition Program. The Nutrition Program serves a delicious and well-balanced meal to seniors 60 and over every Monday – Friday at noon. The suggested donation is $2 per person. Eastside Neighborhood Center of Catholic Charities, 2150 Alum Rock Avenue in San Jose offers a variety of activities and services for seniors on an ongoing basis. These include Bingo, Free legal assistance, Senior club dancing, Senior Care Advocacy, Nutrition Programs, Nurse Screenings, Free Insurance Screenings, and more. The San Jose Widow/Widowers Club meets at 12:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of every month for lunch at the Cup & Saucer Restaurant, 1375 Blossom Hill Road in Princeton Plaza. AARP Information Center needs volunteers to staff their office. Duties include helping seniors find various services and programs, and providing information on senior needs. The office is located at 840 Willow Street, Suite 300, at the corner of Bird and Willow Streets on bus route #25. VOLUNTEERS

History San José is recruiting volunteers and docents. Join the HSJ corps of dedicated volunteers who share the love of history and the love of a pastoral setting. Volunteers receive training of their choice of categories:  school programs, historic building interpretations, archives, photography and object collections; retail store and café; gardening, special events and more. During the summer docents welcome visitors to the historic buildings at History Park weekdays as well as weekends, bringing history alive.  Specific historic buildings are open on a variable schedule throughout the summer. Interested volunteers should contact Barbara Johnston at bjohnston@historysanjose.org or 918-1047. May 1 – July 28
Just in time for Spring-- a new exhibit, "A Garden of Lace" at the Sunnyvale Lace Museum.  The exhibit will run May 1 through July 28.  The free exhibit features lace with intricate floral designs from the 1800's forward. Flowers have been a favorite subject for needlework designers for hundreds of years.  This special exhibit features lace edged dresses, shawls, collars, bonnets, doilies, table cloths and bedspreads. The Lace Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and located at 552 South Murphy Avenue in Sunnyvale, CA with free parking.

Community Meetings on San José's Recycle Plus Curbside Service Changes: Several community meetings held throughout the area in June will help prepare San José residents for transition to new garbage and recycling haulers starting the week of July 2.  Two-thirds of San José's single-family households will experience some changes as the new program takes effect.  Collection days will stay the same, but time of day may change. Patience may be required the first few weeks of transition as the new drivers learn new routes and new trucks.  A white truck (Garden City Sanitation) will collect garbage and a grey truck (California Waste Solutions) will collect recycling. GreenWaste Recovery will expand its yard trimmings collection and street sweeping services to citywide coverage.
