Concern over bad driving at EVHS

Editor,
Can you imagine the teachers at our beautiful Evergreen Valley High School teaching the children not to worry about following rules, not to worry about being respectful of others, not to worry about the safety of others, and just to worry about yourself, and what is best and easiest for you?

I know as a parent, I would have a FIT! Well, if you drop your child off in the morning or pick them up after school, it would be apparent that this is what a lot of the parents are teaching their children! I drive to Palo Alto everyday for work and in that 45-minute commute, I do not run into as many rude, inconsiderate, law-breaking, self-centered drivers as I do in the short time I am on the streets surrounding Evergreen Valley High School and within its parking lots.

People stop anywhere they please, and I mean ANYWHERE! In the middle of a crosswalk, in the middle of an intersection, next to fire hydrants, at the entrance of the parking lots so they don’t have to pull in and get stuck in that quagmire. They stop right next to “no stopping” signs, allowing no one to get by, they even stop right where they are in a lane! This is just on the streets surrounding the school – go in the parking lot and you can guarantee yourself a good 20+ minutes in there trying to get out.

Very few people are thoughtful enough to take turns getting in line to get out of the parking lots, with two different aisles feeding back out, which is usually backed up because it is blocked by someone doing the previously mentioned violations! I can’t tell you how many times I have cringed at a student nearly getting hit at the crosswalk!

Hello people! Do you realize that the young adults you are dropping off at school will be driving within the next two years and THIS is the way you want them to drive? They are learning from your example! For the safety of the children now and their safety as they become drivers, please stop this nonsense NOW!

“Adults teach children in three important ways: the first by example, the second is by example, and the third is by example.” – Albert Schweitzer

There is one good thing that has come from this whole situation. It supplies me with a multitude of violations to point out to my child, who has a driving permit, on how NOT to drive.

Sincerely,

A concerned member of the community and parent of an Evergreen Valley High School student
