Councilmember Forrest Williams will discuss issues and his recent activities in the area of education. Councilmember Dave Cortese will discuss the Evergreen Visioning Project and his recent activities in the area of education and ESUHSD Board President Manuel Herrera will discuss activities regarding the many education issues facing ESUHSD.

Those attending will have about 45 minutes to ask questions.

Do you enjoy reading and helping others? Consider a richly rewarding volunteer opportunity as a Tutor in the adult literacy program, Partners in Reading.

Work one-to-one with English-speaking adults, who read or write below a ninth grade level, to achieve their learning goals. Sign up now for the April 6 orientation and training on April 9 and 16.

Fourteen hours of training, instructional materials and on-going support are all provided free. No experience necessary. Required commitment of two hours per week for six months. Call the San Jose Public Library at (408) 808-2361.

SCVCC Women’s Club presents third annual fashion show, luncheon


The Silver Creek Valley Country Club Women’s Club will host its third annual fashion show and luncheon on Wednesday, May 19, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The festive event features fashions from Cambric of Los Gatos, FloBell of Saratoga, Talbots of Los Gatos, Trudy’s and the SCVCC Pro Shop, which will be modeled by club members.

Tickets for the three-course lunch and fashion show are $35. Raffle tickets will be sold for $5, and all proceeds from the raffle will go to the Support Network for Battered Women. Watch for more details about this worthy cause in future editions of the Evergreen Times.


Windermere looking for projects to support on Community Service Day

Windermere Silicon Valley Properties is proud of its tradition to give back to the local community. On June 11, Windermere will hold its annual Community Service Day, a day set aside to assist with projects in need of volunteers.

In past years, Windermere agents and staff have provided hundreds of hours of volunteer help for Silicon Valley charities including Habitat for Humanity, Sacred Heart Community Services, Second Harvest Food Bank and Teen Challenge.

In 2005, Windermere hopes to identify local Evergreen and Silver Creek Valley area projects that need help. With more than 60 energetic and enthusiastic volunteers, Windermere can provide a wide range of assistance, including light construction services such as general repairs and painting, landscape clean-up and restoration and other organizational or administrative activities.

East Valley YMCA Carwash to benefit Youth and Government Program March 19

The East Valley Family YMCA staff and volunteers will host a free carwash in the parking lot at 1975 South White Road in San Jose on Saturday, March 19 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Donations will be accepted. Music will be provided by a disc jockey.

The carwash benefits high school students enrolled in the Youth and Government Program. The program aims to teach students in Grades 10, 11 and 12 about California state government. Started in 1948, the Youth and Government Program is a statewide youth educational program with 90 YMCAs participating. The program is offered at the East Valley Family YMCA and four other branches of the YMCA of Santa Clara Valley.

This past year 29 students participated through the East Valley YMCA. Funds donated for the carwash will be applied towards student scholarships for the program. For information about the event, contact Tina Gu at (408) 715-6531.


Cevalo Riding Academy offers spring camp
Cevalo Riding Academy will be holding two spring camp sessions March 28 – April 1 and April 18 – 22. Cevalo’s day camp program introduces young riders to the joy of working with horses. Campers learn basic horsemanship and riding skills through a series of hands-on activities and games.

Cevalo Riding Academy is an educational non-profit corporation whose purpose is to educate the community about horses and provide a safe environment for children and adults to learn horsemanship, sportsmanship and teamwork.
