Ballet San Jose Silicon Valley presents Shakespeare’s timeless testament to the power of love – “Romeo and Juliet” - combining all the beauty, humor, adventure and tragedy of the frightening urgency of youth is danced to the brilliant and emotive score of Sergei Prokofiev. Dennis Nahat’s theatrically intimate choreography grips the senses and compels us once again, to believe in love at first sight. “Romeo and Juliet” plays only at San Jose Center for the Performing Arts. The San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles presents Jean Ray Laury: A Life by Design. Opening reception with the artist will be held at the museum, 520 South First Street in San Jose, on January 22 from 2 – 4 p.m. General admission is $5, Seniors and students with ID $4, children under 13 are free. “BENT: Gender and Sexuality in Contemporary Scandinavian Art”: curated by Whitney Chadwick, at the Fine Arts Gallery, Fine Arts Bldg. SFSU campus. This cutting-edge international group show looks at the ways in which issues of gender and sexuality inform the work of four artists: Eija-Liisa Ahtila, Jesper Just, Annika Larsson and Annica Karlsson Rixon. Through photography, video and film, they draw from the rich media bank of images of masculinity and femininity circulated in advertising, film, historical art and popular culture. BENT is a project of the International Center for the Arts (ICA) at San Francisco State University. The San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles, 520 South First Street in San Jose presents “Art Quilts and America during the 1960s and 1970s” – A slide lecture with Dr. Sandra Sider. Dr. Sider’s lecture will discuss how American art quilts evolved in the turbulent decades of the 1960s and 1970s, especially in relation to contemporary politics and space-age materials. The San Jose Youth Symphony (SJYS) Philharmonic Orchestra, now in its 54th season, will perform its Spring Concert, Harmonious Collaborations, at the California Theatre, 345 South First Street in San Jose at 2:30 p.m. The concert will feature one of the first side-by-side concerts with the SJYS Philharmonic Orchestra, Avant Flute Choir and Percussion Ensemble performing “Mars” from “The Planets” by Gustav Holst. Also featured is a performance of Prokofiev’s “Piano Concerto No. 2” by Kenric Tam, co-winner of the 2005 Young Artist Competition. The third piece on the program will feature Joseph Chun, second winner of the 2005 Young Artist Competition, performing Antonin Dvorak’s “Concerto for Cello” and “Orchestra in B minor, Op. 104”. San Jose Stage Company, presents “Inherit The Wind,” directed by James Reese and performing at The Stage, 490 South First Street (at William St.) In a small Tennessee town, a young high school teacher is brought to trial for teaching from Charles Darwin’s The Origin of Species. For the prosecution, three-time Presidential candidate Matthew Harrison Brady (Kevin Blackton) agrees to represent the World’s Christian Fundamentalists Association and drive Darwin out of the classrooms. For the defense, Henry Drummond (Randall King) is hired by the Baltimore Herald. These two titans of the judicial system square off to decide the fate of the teacher, Bertram Cates, with historical ramifications that still affect the American educational system today. Bay Area Birth Information and City Lights Theater Company presents “BIRTH” performing at City Lights Theater, 529 South First Street in San Jose. Making its West Coast Premier, “BIRTH” weaves the experience of seven women into a story of choice and knowledge. Written by Karen Brody, and directed by Ross Nelson and Patricia Madden, this is not Hollywood’s version of birth, but rather real stories that paint the naked truth of birth in America today. February 11 – March 12
Sunnyvale Community Players presents “Anne of Green Gables - The Musical”, at the Sunnyvale Community Theater, 550 East Remington Drive. This is the classic tale of an orphan girl who rises from destitution to happiness in the farm country entirely by virtue of her pluck and personality. Children’s Musical Theater San Jose is proud to present Broadway’s “The Wind in the Willows,” performing at the Montgomery Theater in downtown San Jose (corner of Market and San Carlos streets). Tickets are now on sale to the public for $15 adults, $12 children 12 and under. Special Target® Family Matinee performance Saturday, March 4 at 12 noon, all tickets $7.25.

Audition sign up for the California Youth Symphony has started for all CYS ensembles, encompassing eight programs for all symphonic instruments, from beginning to advanced levels, for musicians of high school age and younger. Registration deadline is March 22, but applicants are strongly encouraged to sign up early. Auditions will take place at Foothill College, 12345 El Monte Rd., Los Altos Hills, in April. German Language Classes!. South Bay Deutscher Schulverein, a German-Language Saturday School, offers German language instructions at the Willow Glen Educational Park, Middle School Section, 2001 Cottle Avenue, CA 95125. March 11 – Saturday SeniorNet Computer Class Sign-Up: Register for SeniorNet Computer classes at 9 a.m.  Learn Digital Images, Word, Searching the Internet, Introduction to Computer and More!! VOLUNTEERS
Ongoing
Those who long for the bucolic setting that was once the essence of Santa Clara Valley will find it at San José’s historic Emma Prusch Farm Park. The park is seeking energetic tour docents to teach elementary school children about farming and farm animals. If you enjoy playing with ranch animals, such as chickens, pigs, sheep, goats, ducks, you are encouraged to volunteer and help take care of them. There are many other volunteer opportunities in various park projects, including weeding, cleaning the barn, and gardening.  If interested, call 926-5555.

The Friends of Guadalupe River Park & Gardens provides several volunteer opportunities to get you involved in the beauty of the Park & Gardens. Meet new people and contribute to a great local project! We can accommodate large groups – a great team building experience! Our Rose Garden Work Days are every Wednesday & Saturday from 9 a.m. – noon. Assist with garden maintenance and plant care in the Heritage Rose Garden. Volunteers can help on a weekly basis, or occasionally as their time allows.
