New kid on the block: The Dove Hill Neighborhood Association

There is a new neighborhood association in the Evergreen area - the Dove Hill Neighborhood Association.

DHNA, which encompasses about 450 homes, was created in March of 2005 to address neighbors’ concerns who reside between the areas of Yerba Buena Road, Silver Creek Road, Highway 101, and Marsh Manor Road.

Japneet Kaur, DHNA President, helped raise awareness to start a neighborhood association within this area with the help of Shirley Mata from the Neighborhood Development Center.

“As I talked to several neighbors, I realized that many folks had several concerns and starting a neighborhood association seemed beneficial for the entire neighborhood,” said Japneet.

DHNA has the five following objectives:

To provide opportunities for neighbors to build unity and friendships

To provide educational opportunities for residents to become more aware and proactive in solving issues in the neighborhood

To have a voice before government and other public entities;

To create a network of resources in the neighborhood

To create and build partnerships which are responsive to the needs of the neighborhood.

“When neighbors first met, they addressed concerns regarding traffic, police enforcement, and beautification and as a result, three sub-committees were formed to address these issues,” said Japneet.

Much progress has already been made.

There is a new speed limit sign on Deans Place Way, additional traffic signs have been added in the Carick Place Way/Colt Road intersection, several dim lights in Dove Hill Park and neighborhood courts have been replaced, a neighborhood clean up day was held where over 14 large bags of trash were collected, and efforts have been made with Orchard Hardware Supply and Target to ensure more clean sweeps of abandoned shopping carts in the neighborhood.

How has this been possible? Through the efforts of the fellow neighbors that reside within this area.

“The association currently consists and depends on the 90 members who volunteer their time to take on tasks to improve the neighborhood,” said Ruchi Iparmesh, Vice President of DHNA.

However, as this association encompasses about 450 homes and with only 90 neighbors involved so far, fellow neighbors are urged to get involved.

“With 90 members so far we are doing very well comparatively speaking, but of course it’d be ideal to have a neighbor(s) participating from each home,” said Zoraida, DHNA Treasurer.

Any person, 18 years of age or older, who resides within the boundaries of the Association and supports the purpose and objectives of the association is eligible for membership. The next meeting will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 6:30 p.m. in Dove Hill Elementary School’s Multi-Purpose Room.
