Evergreen area residents Paula Romanchuk, Denise Perez and Danielle Shank are now a part of Northern California girls' ice hockey history by having their name engraved on the MLK 19U – ‘Best in the West’ Championship Trophy as the San Jose Jr. Sharks 19U AAA Girls' Hockey team won the 2008 MLK 20U championship on Jan. 21 by beating a powerful Vancouver Fusion Team 3-2 in the final at Sharks Ice at San Jose.
An opening goal by Taryn Couture on a headman pass from Paula Romanchuk steadied the home crowd's nerves mid way through the second period after 25 minutes of tense end-to-end hockey. Two strikes by Paula Romanchuk and Katie Jordon, assisted by Denise Perez and Rachel Llanes by the middle of the third period put San Jose firmly in control. This sparked a furious comeback by the Fusion who scored two goals in five minutes before goalie Megan Gallagher (16 of 18 saves) and the Lady Sharks closed out the game 3-2 for a tremendous win.
The 19U Sharks went 3-1 through the preliminary rounds including wins over archrivals California Wave and the Fraser Valley Phantoms in an exciting battle of top west coast Canadian and U.S.-based teams.

Sharks to donate more than $273,000
San Jose Sharks President and Chief Executive Officer Greg Jamison announced today that the Sharks Foundation will donate grants totaling more than $273,000 to its 2007-08 grant recipients. Jamison also announced that the organization has created a new logo to represent the foundation and to establish a stronger connection to the San Jose Sharks hockey team. Over the next few months, representatives from the Sharks Foundation, with assistance from San Jose Sharks loveable mascot S.J. Sharkie, will deliver the funding during site visits with each organization.

The 2007-08 Sharks Foundation grant recipients are: ACE Public School Network, Alum Rock Counseling Center Inc., Books Aloud, CityTeam Ministries, Environmental Volunteers, Family Sup-portive Housing, Inc., Friends Outside in Santa Clara County, Greater San Jose After School All-Stars, Loaves & Fishes Family Kitchen, O’Neill Sea Odyssey, Sacred Heart Community Service, San Jose Repertory Theatre, Silicon Valley Conference for Community Justice and Valley Medical Center Foundation.
The Sharks Foundation board selected these 14 beneficiaries from more than 75 grant applications that were submitted last fall. The selected organizations all met the criteria set forth by the Sharks Foundation which states that the organization must be classified as a 501(C)3 nonprofit group and the funding must be applied towards programs and services for local youths in Santa Clara County.
“We hope that the support of the Sharks Foundation will help these organizations in their continued efforts to make a positive impact in our community,” said Jamison. “The Sharks Foundation selected these organizations because they reach deeply into the community in many different ways and touch the lives of thousands of kids in Santa Clara County. We are proud to be associated with these outstanding organizations.”
