Diego Abeloos named Editor of the Evergreen Times

The New Year is bringing many exciting changes to the Times Media offices and our oldest community newspaper, the Evergreen Times, is no exception.

Diego Abeloos

As of this issue the Evergreen Times will feature a new editor at the helm: Diego Abeloos. Diego, a journalism graduate from San Jose State University, is currently the editor of the Blossom Valley Times and the Santa Teresa Times.

Diego is a California Newspaper Publisher’s Award winner who is well-known for his dedication and keen journalistic talent. He is also the sports editor at Times Media and will continue to oversee sports writers—and will cover some Evergreen sports himself—but his main focus will be covering the local news that is most important to Evergreen residents.

Diego was born in Belgium and retains Belgium citizenship, but he grew up nearby in Los Altos. While he lives in downtown San Jose, Diego and his wife Vanessa have many ties to the Evergreen area, where Vanessa grew up. Diego is very excited about his new assignment and is looking forward to covering the diverse and eclectic Evergreen area.

“I’m thrilled about the opportunity to report on such a great area,” Diego said. “To be able to provide the residents of Evergreen with local news, features and sports is a new and exciting challenge for me.”

Diego welcomes reader input on any issue that is important to you, the reader. He can be reached at (408) 494-7000 x 203 or by e-mail at diego@timesmediainc.com.

Sheila Sanchez, an award-winning journalist with over 20 years of newspaper experience, will continue to cover city hall, and as you can imagine, it is quite an exciting beat to cover these days, what with an election just around the corner.

Sheila can be reached at (408) 494-7000 x 206 or by e-mail at Sheila@timesmediainc.com.

Evergreen Times staff members Nate Levy, Diego Abeloos and Sheila Sanchez pose at the California Newspaper Publishers Association awards luncheon July 9 in San Francisco, where each of them walked away winners.

Former Times editor Candy Richter will be covering the complex, ever-changing Evergreen Visioning Project with a sure and steady hand. She is also the calendar editor.

Candy can be reached at (408) 494-7000 x 225 or by e-mail at candy@timesmediainc.com.

Diego’s former journalism professor Dona Nichols will continue to provide a glimpse into the lighter side of suburbia with her Silicon Valley Mom column. Ironically, Nichols is now working for one of her former students!

Newcomer Michelle Hecht has joined the staff to cover features and news. She is a Radio, Television and Film major from San Jose State and is also employed part-time at NBC11 as a production assistant.

We will continue to bring you your favorite features, such as Street Talk, Teacher of the Month and Pet of the Month, and plan to add a few surprises in the coming months, too. With these changes we are looking forward to offering the Evergreen area the high quality community news you’ve come to expect for the past 20 years from the Evergreen Times.
