How do you feel about Nancy Pelosi being two heartbeats away from the presidency? Do you think she will help initiate bipartisanism in the House? Why or why not?
(Asked at Longs on San Felipe)
“I’m delighted because I’m a Democrat and I think she’s very intelligent. Yes, I do believe she will help initiate bipartisanism.”

“I think it’s about time that there’s a woman Speaker of the House or just in a high government position. I don’t know, but I hope so.”

“I think it’s a really good thing. I’m glad she has the job and I hope she does a good job. I also hope that she will make some changes. I think so. She seems strong and intelligent. I think lots of people are happy she has the job.”

“I think it’s kind of scary. I’m not exactly sure why I think that other than because I hope that she’s strong enough—it’s a very heavy job.”

“I feel concerned. The direction of the Democratic Party as a whole worries me, and she’s their leader. The party’s planks and platform are for abortion and for homosexual marriage. Those liberal stances worry me. Not that I’m totally sold on the Republicans either, some of the things they do deeply concern me. I doubt that she can. I don’t know that that is what she wants to do."

“She wouldn’t be in the position she’s in if she wasn’t capable. She’s been in politics as long as anyone I know. I was a registered Republican since 1972. [Since] this last term with Bush, I’ve switched to the Democratic Party. I was all for Afghanistan, but not for Iraq, it had nothing to do with 9-11. Saddam Hussein is the only one crazy enough to hold that country together. I would say yes. At that level of government, I don’t know if it’s possible. But there are a lot of liberal Republicans, but there are also lots of conservative Democrats, but now is the best time to achieve bipartisanism.”
